I like corporations. It makes sense and I get to do crosswords while drinking coffee.

Thanks to that superbug, I had a rotten night's sleep last night that I imagine was very close to what a bad trip on acid would be like. Hopefully tonight Nyquil will do its job and knock me out. Luckily for me, most of my Marden editor duties can be done over e-mail, and the cold doesn't seem to have affected my aptitude for logistics!

But overall, the semester started as well as I could have hoped -- not too much reading, a relatively cooperative moot court board, a pretty little apartment with lots of fridge space, and a boy to help clean and carry things. This A paper requirement nonsense is turning into a pain, though; I feel like I'm beyond the point where I need to prove to some nameless, faceless bureaurcrats that I can string 4 ideas together and write a coherent paragraph.

In any case, I spend a lot of time doing online crossword puzzles, looking at DC area real estate, and finding neato game acquisitions. Especially when I'm sick.

This superbug that's going around is pretty impressive -- I'm sniffling and coughing and spacey and totally confused about what my professor is trying to teach me about valuing equity because it doesn't seem to fit in with the textbook at all.

Scenes from a horrifically expensive NY studio:

JP: [hangs off phone] That was my firm. They gave me an offer.
Daphne: That's great!
JP: Yeah! No more studying ever!

Did you know that "smelly felts" is a Canadianism? I didn't until today. I mean, who says "scented markers" anyway?

And BBQ tonight at my place! Starts at 6. Gin contributions greatly appreciated.

The Pope hates Canada.

So it turns out that the culmination of my 23 years of musical exposure results in a weakness for John Denver and the Dixie Chicks.

I often tell people that I was completely partitioned from popular culture until I was in high school, but that's not entirely true -- I just encountered popular culture in a way that I think most second-generation kids do. I.e., second-hand. Thriller through figure skate. 90s rap through summer camp. New Kids at recess. (Tangent: I recall the day I encountered a classmate with a Danny doll in Grade 2, and being baffled. I am still baffled. Continuity is most satisifying, where it can be had.) The musical exposure I had at home was essentially classical, ABBA, and Simon & Garfunkel. If you put that all in a blender and buzz it, it somehow turns into John Denver and the Dixie Chicks.

Go figure.
