So it turns out that the culmination of my 23 years of musical exposure results in a weakness for John Denver and the Dixie Chicks.
I often tell people that I was completely partitioned from popular culture until I was in high school, but that's not entirely true -- I just encountered popular culture in a way that I think most second-generation kids do. I.e., second-hand. Thriller through figure skate. 90s rap through summer camp. New Kids at recess. (Tangent: I recall the day I encountered a classmate with a Danny doll in Grade 2, and being baffled. I am still baffled. Continuity is most satisifying, where it can be had.) The musical exposure I had at home was essentially classical, ABBA, and Simon & Garfunkel. If you put that all in a blender and buzz it, it somehow turns into John Denver and the Dixie Chicks.
Go figure.
